Rowan County Public Library Board
Your Rowan County Public Library's mission is to enhance the quality of life for all citizens in and near their service area by providing a catalog of items and information for leisure and lifelong learning needs. Since the library's inception as a taxing district in 1968—thanks to the dedicated work of citizen petitioners—they have served Morehead and the surrounding communities with educational, arts, and entertainment materials and programming.
They continue every day to improve efforts toward free availability of learning and knowledge for all, to be a regional leader in service and technology, to hold themselves to the highest standards for rendering exceptional service and an inviting environment, and to take pride in being your local public library.
Digital Resources available through the Rowan County Public Library include a variety of digital borrowing services, scholarly databases, language learning, legal forms, and more for patrons to access anywhere. Check out rowancountylibrary.org/digital-resources/ for a full list of links. That's just the beginning of the library's Technology and Wi-Fi services: they offer desktop computer stations for public use, laptop computers for check out by adult patrons, and Wi-Fi hotspots available for checkout to adult patrons who live within the signal radius of local cellular towers.
Libraries and communities are continually evolving, and your Rowan County Public Library has stepped up to the task of keeping up with both. Community Events are held at the library frequently, including but not limited to weekly children's programs, monthly teen programs, periodical movie nights, and more. Programming for adults includes the Chow Club, Creative Coloring, On Board, Preserving Your Heritage Genealogy Club, and Writer’s Workshops. Zumba Gold will be returning weekly on Mondays at 6pm starting June 6th.
Genealogy is important to many Rowan County residents, and at your local library, you can find excellent resources including a microfilm reader, an unknown persons gallery, and census data in print. Online, you can access Ancentry Library Edition, Ancestry HeritageQuest, Find a Grave, and the Library of Congress' National Digital Newspaper Program. Notary Services are also available free of charge.
One current effort underway is “Radon on the Radar”, a research program made possible through partnership with UK’s Colleges of Public Health and Nursing. This allows you to take home a radon detector to test your house’s radon gas levels, and if detected, steps will be presented to you to help mitigate that risk. This is one way you can participate in this citizen-led science initiative and help protect your family.
Summer Reading is back in person this year! If you’ve never heard of Summer Reading, it’s a national program meant to inspire everyone to use your local library and have fun reading. Like everything they do, it’s all free and the materials are provided for you by the library. All you have to do is show up, have fun, track what you read, and turn it in.
The Rowan County Public Library is glad to welcome readers of all ages to their programs and events, inside and outside. When you register for Summer Reading in person, by phone, or online, you’ll get a log sheet you can use to track what you read. If you meet the reading challenge for your age group, you’ll be entered to win two (2) free books at the end of the program. Plus, if you read a little extra, you’ll have a chance to win an additional grand prize, too: Complete an extra challenge and you could snag a $25 gift card for CoffeeTree Books. Visit https://rowancountylibrary.org/summer-reading/ for registration information and a list of all the great events they have planned this summer.
It is this wide range of free community services- and the dedication of everyone involved- that sets apart your local Rowan County Public Library.
