Want to know if you are exposed to radon in your home?
Want to know if you are exposed to radon in your home?
The Rowan County Public Library is working with the University of Kentucky on a research study to provide home radon detectors at the library at no cost to you. Patrons can check-out a Corentium Home by Airthings® Home Radon Detector and test their home for two weeks. At the end of testing, patrons will know their average home radon level. Detectors are available for check-out at the Rowan County Public Library Reference Desk.
Quick Facts about Radon:
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas from the decay of uranium found in rocks and soil. It is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and causes no immediate symptoms.
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and the leading cause of lung cancer among people who have never smoked. There are 1,033 new cases of radon-induced lung cancer in Kentucky each year.
Most radon exposure occurs in the home, where the gas enters and becomes trapped.
The only way to know how much radon is in your home is to test for it.
Radon mitigation can reduce indoor radon by up to 99%. Cost of mitigation is similar to other home repairs and can be variable depending on the construction of your home and your foundation type.
Additionally, if you check out a radon detector at the Rowan County Public Library, you will be entered to win a gift card. Drawings will be held monthly, and they will draw names at random from all individuals who have checked out a radon detector, according to library records. Your name will only be entered in the giveaway during the month the detector was checked out.
