Morehead KY Turtle Walk: A Public Art Sponsorship Opportunity

Morehead is looking forward to a new opportunity for everyone in the area to enjoy public art and for businesses to attract visitors to their location: the Morehead Kentucky Turtle Walk.

In 1778, Daniel Boone was adopted into the Shawnee Indian tribe and given the name Sheltowee, or Big Turtle, by Chief Blackfish. You can read more about that history on our website here: https://www.rcky.us/daniel-boone-and-chief-blackfish. The name Sheltowee may sound familiar as the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail spans the Daniel Boone National Forest and runs along Main Street right here in Morehead, Kentucky.

If you follow the Sheltowee, you see a striking logo, a turtle. In the spirit of the turtle, statues will be placed around our community. As a business, individual, government or non-profit group, you are given the opportunity to sponsor a turtle. This will allow a statue to be placed on your property as an official "Morehead KY Turtle Walk" destination. All sponsorship details will be provided in a packet that can be picked up at the Morehead Visitor Center (150 East First Street) from 8am-4pm on Monday- Friday.

The last call for artists is now. Here’s how to apply:
- An informational packet can be picked up at the Morehead Visitor Center (150 E. 1st St.) from 8am-4pm on Monday- Friday.
-Artists must submit three (3) physical drawings of their proposal (template included in packet).
-Each drawing must indicate the artist's name, a written description of the turtle, the name of the turtle, and a list of the materials planned to use on the statue.
-Artists must include contact information, past work, and a resume.
-You must have your application complete before Labor Day.
-More detailed information is in the packet upon pickup.

If interested in participating in the Turtle Walk as a sponsor or artist, stop by the Morehead Visitor’s Center and pick up a packet. Artist packets will be submitted to a panel of regional jurors right after Labor Day, so make sure you get it in soon!
